Bob was raised in Poulsbo along the Hood Canal waterfront, where he enjoyed fishing, diving, waterskiing, and spending time with friends and family. He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1972 and married his high school sweetheart, Jessica, shortly afterward.

In 1973 Bob and Jessica moved to Port Townsend. Bob joined the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at age 20 and fulfilled his childhood dream. He spent 26 years with the sheriff’s office and was instrumental in creating the Reserve Deputy program, the Marine program, and Search-and-Rescue dive team.

In retirement Bob enjoyed gardening, grilling, bird watching, carpentry, crabbing, fishing, traveling, attending baseball games, family gatherings, restoring classic cars, and cruising to rock music. He was outgoing and friendly; a natural leader known for his wit and for speaking his mind. Bob loved his family and friends but was particularly proud of his five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Bob will be greatly missed by many.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Fredrick; his mother, Evelena; and his brother, Fred.  Bob is survived by his daughters, Melissa (Andy) Pernsteiner, Jenny Haynes, and Emily Haynes-Moore; grandchildren, Kyle Pernsteiner, Jillian Pernsteiner, Wyatt Moore, Levi Moore and Addie Haynes; great-granddaughter, Elaine Pernsteiner; siblings, Marilyn (Don) Turowski, Tom Haynes, Nancy (Bob) Bale, and Teresa Smith.

A celebration of life is being held at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1. Please bring your favorite dish for a potluck, along with a story about Bob to share. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
