Michael John Logan, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on June 24, 2024, at the age of 84 in Olympia, Washington. Born on January 9, 1940, in Emmett, Idaho, Mike spent his formative years in Port Townsend, Washington, where he attended Lincoln Grade School and Port Townsend High School. His pursuit of higher education led him to The Evergreen State Collage.

Mike dedicated his professional life to the Department of Juvenile Corrections, where he began his career as a cottage counselor and rose to the role of superintendent. Renowned for his ethical demeanor, leadership, humor, and innate kindness, Mike made a significant impact on both his colleagues and the many lives he helped shape during his tenure.

A man of diverse interests, Mike was an avid sports fan, devotedly following the Mariners and Seahawks, and never missing a game played by his children and grandchildren. He was also a skilled golfer, a passion passed down from his father, and enjoyed steelhead fishing, reading, and in his younger years, pitching in a men’s softball league. His last beloved cat, Ninja, was a testament to his love for animals.

Mike was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair, Washington, and Saint Edward’s Catholic Church in Shelton, Washington.  He had been an altar boy at Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Port Townsend as a boy, taller at twelve than the diminutive priest. His faith and community played a central role throughout his life.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Karen Logan, née Gunn; children, Joseph (Andrea) Logan, Jennifer (Mark) Knowles, Regina (Jay) McDougall, and Alexander (Christina) Logan; sister, Molly Logue née Logan; grandchildren, Logan Knowles, Lucas Knowles, Eva Lillian Johnston née Knowles, Ashley McDougall, Claire McDougall, Mae McDougall, and Christian Logan; and great-grandson, Amari.  His sisters-in-law, Helen Gunn (Michael) and Barbara née Gunn (Pete) Donlon were close friends as well as relatives.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Girard Logan and Jean Sheldon Logan, as well as his in-laws, George and Helen Gunn, and brother-in-law, Ernest Gunn.

His life, marked by dedication, love, and service, will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.  Mike was a very tall tree and the forest is diminished by his loss.

A funeral Mass was held July 6, 2024, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair, Washington.
