Big plans for first county Airport Day

The inaugural Jefferson County Airport Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. It will feature historic aircraft displays, helicopter and hot air balloon rides, a classic car show, live music, food vendors, face painting and more.

Among the organizations supporting the effort are Port of Port Townsend, the Port Townsend Aero Museum, the Commemorative Air Force, Historic Helicopters, Dream Catcher Hot Air Balloon, the Pilots Association, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Life Flight.

The Port Townsend Aero Museum collection will hold an open house to show off its antique and classic aircraft, while the historic aircraft on static display will range from a single-seat aerobatic biplane that’s a homebuilt flying machine, to a twin-engine, pressurized business plane produced in a factory.

Many of these planes participate in emergency relief exercises, and are likely to provide emergency transportation services to the Quimper Peninsula if and when a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami hit the area.

The Cascade Warbirds plan to have a kid-friendly biplane on site, while the Tri-County R/C Flyers will bring their model airplanes. The Dream Catcher Hot Air Balloon can accommodate mobility-challenged individuals, seniors and veterans, while the Rakers Car Club shows off its classic automobiles.

Global Heat and Hinterlands are on tap to play live music.

Flutter By Pizza Pie plans to serve up wood-fired pizza, while the Spruce Goose will be open to the public in their on-site restaurant, and will have a booth in the event hub, serving up their famous pies.
