A “fundraiser festival” has been organized by friends and neighbors to help a farmer purchase the farm where they have lived and worked for five years.
Laurae Hughes is currently struggling to purchase the land where she has operated Gray Fox Farm, said Ren Alexander, who is part of the group who has teamed to search for funding, including organizing the fundraiser.
The Sunday, Aug. 4, event is about rallying community support before “Chimacum loses an incredible local farm and wonderful individual,” said Alexander. “I farm alongside her. Her farm is her entire life and a wonderful asset for the community.”
He said Hughes, a federally enrolled confederated tribal member of Siletz Indians, has less than 90 days to purchase the farm before she has to vacate.
The fundraiser, which starts at 2 p.m., is being held at 6073 Beaver Valley Road. From 2 to 6 p.m. there will be interactive activities and discussions, including a nettle fiber class, interactive poetry writing and an intergenerational Native discussion panel. An hour of participation-optional group interactive games is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. Raffle winners will be drawn at 7 p.m. The concert — featuring a lineup of local musicians — starts at 7:30 p.m.
There will be food available from Fermented Futures, and pastries and desserts from Sour Baby Bakery, as well as snacks and beverages available by donation. There also will be several local vendors present, including Gray Fox Farm, which will have goods for sale.
The raffle will have 25 winners, Alexander said. Tickets are $30 each. All goods and services included in the prizes — such as gift cards, custom cake vouchers, and massage vouchers — are donated by local businesses.
The grand prizes are three baskets, each valued at $300 each.
Businesses include Moonlight Oysters, Cold Mountain Cakes, Seal Dog Coffee Bar, Pacific Woods, Gift of Grace Fiber Arts, Uptown Cutlery, Fruition Design, Pixie Honey, Good Juju Ghee, Moving Grace Arts, and The Forest Erin.
Admission is a suggested donation of $15-$30, but Alexander said no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Donations will be accepted all day and 501(c)3 donation receipts are available upon request for tax purposes.
