Olympic Peninsula YMCA to offer individual swim lessons at Mountain View Pool

Posted

The YMCA of Jefferson County announced that it will begin offering individual swim lessons for all ages at Port Townsend’s  Mountain View Pool on Blaine Street.

The YMCA has brought on two new swim lesson instructors, and individual lessons are available by appointment starting this month.

The two new swim instructors, both Port Townsend locals, are Lynn Hovde and Nancy Speser.

While Hovde and Speser are new hires, they bring a great deal of experience in teaching and aquatic knowledge.

They are lifelong swimmers and have extensive experience teaching various forms of aquatics. Speser has been a lifeguard and manager for Mountain View Pool in the past, and Hovde has been running her own swim school in Port Ludlow since 1995.

“I love to work with people of all ages, sharing my lifelong passion for swimming, and love to see the progress as students develop their swimming skills,” Hovde said.

Both are longtime friends who met at Mountain View Pool in the 1990s, coaching a swim team and teaching synchronized swimming together.

Hovde and Speser even wrote a synchronized swimming book together — “Simply Synchro” — back in 2013.

“I love to swim for fun and fitness and would like to pass on these skills to others,” Speser said. “Water safety is a lifelong learning experience, and I would like to see my community participate in swimming at the highest level.”

Individual swim lessons are offered by appointment in 30-minute sessions. It will cost $30 for YMCA members and $45 for community members. Those interested in swim lessons can fill out the lesson request form on the YMCA’s website at olympicpeninsulaymca.org/mountain-view-pool-swim-lessons.

The YMCA plans to offer group swim sessions starting in the early spring.

Current Mountain View Pool hours are 7 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; the facility is closed Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

For more information about swim lessons, contact Kate Henninger, YMCA of Sequim aquatics director, by email at kate@olympicpeninsulaymca.org or call 360-477-4381, ext. 330.

The YMCA is looking to hire more aquatics staff including lifeguards, youth swim lesson instructors, aquatics fitness instructors, and an aquatics program lead. Interested applicants can apply online at olympicpeninsulaymca.org/careers.
