A treasured space for connection, The Nest community coffeehouse celebrates its first anniversary this month. One of three staple programs of the youth-oriented nonprofit OWL360, The Nest was designed to address a demonstrated need for more supportive spaces for young people.
Opened on Jan. 20, 2023 in Uptown Port Townsend, The Nest offers resources and supportive services to engage young people in real-world-readiness skills, all aimed to help them achieve sustainable independence. Programs are youth-oriented, while the space welcomes all ages, with activities designed to offer support and recreation.
The coffeehouse also serves up locally roasted, organic, fair trade coffee, Lotus energy drinks, a variety of tea and food options, and comfortable seating for relaxing and connecting.
OWL360 reports that 2,300 young adults visited The Nest in its first year of operation. They came to gain career guidance, enjoy art and gaming, or just be in a welcoming space spending time with peers. Visitors had opportunities to interact with certified peer allies, a substance-use peer specialist, and a mental health provider, among other advisors.
“Whether it’s participation on the Youth and Young Adult Advisory Council (YYAAC), taking a ukulele lesson or financial literacy workshop, learning about consent, getting help with a resume, or just hanging out, The Nest successfully impacts the lives of countless local young people, fostering a positive environment for growth, learning, and exploration,” OWL360 reported in a recent statement. “Together, we look forward to continuing our mission of empowering the next generation for many more years to come.”
The Nest is located at 1119 Lawrence St. in Port Townsend. Learn more about OWL360 and The Nest by visiting www.owl360.org.
