Attorneys in a vehicular assault case are continuing to seek a plea agreement that would resolve the felony case short of a trial.

Lori Kaminester, 59, of Port Townsend was arrested in July for driving under the influence and hit-and-run driving after she allegedly hit a bicyclist on Highway 20 near Old Fort Townsend Road.

Kaminester was driving east on Highway 20 just after 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 17 in a 1995 Ford Windstar when her vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and a mirror on the minivan hit a bicyclist and knocked her into the ditch.

The bicyclist, a 48-year-old Coupeville woman, was taken to St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale for treatment.

The Washington State Patrol said Kaminester did not stop at the scene, and her minivan was later found in a city parking lot by Port Townsend police.

Kaminester was initially charged with hit-and-run from an injury accident and DUI.

The charges were amended in September 2022 to hit-and-run from an injury accident and vehicular assault-DUI.

Both charges are felonies. 

Hit-and-run from an injury accident can result in a maximum prison sentence of five years upon conviction, and a $10,000 fine. Conviction of vehicular assault-DUI can result in a 10-year prison sentence and a $20,000 fine.

Negotiations on a plea agreement stretch back months, and a change of plea hearing has been set for Friday, July 14 in Jefferson County Superior Court.
