A midday semi-truck accident on Thursday, Dec. 21, on Highway 20 narrowed the road to single-lane alternating access, but was not the result of driver impairment, nor did it result in any injuries.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Katherine Weatherwax serves as the public information officer for District 8, which includes Jefferson County, and she corresponded with The Leader about the accident that took place just before noon on Dec. 21, at Milepost 1 on Highway 20 eastbound, heading toward Port Townsend.
“The driver was going around the corner, when they went around too tight, and the trailer went into the ditch,” Weatherwax told The Leader.
By noon, there was a fire on the scene, and the semi was on its side, blocking the eastbound lane, but the driver was out of the vehicle and walking around.
The Washington State Department of Transportation was notified at 12:16 p.m. that there was still debris in the roadway, which would ultimately require WSDOT’s presence on site for traffic control.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., it was additionally determined that the roadway would need to be closed for the semi’s removal by a towing service, which turned out to be Fife Service and Towing, from the town of Fife, Washington.
Fife Towing was dispatched to respond with two rotators and a tractor, in case the trailer would need to be hauled as well.
WSDOT crews were on the scene by 1:41 p.m. to help clean up the accident’s aftermath, and to take over the traffic control on site.
