PT Yacht Club awards nine scholarships for 2023-24 academic year

The Port Townsend Yacht Club awarded nine scholarships for the academic year 2023 - 2024.

The Yacht Club has awarded these scholarships annually for over 30 years. They are offered to individuals pursuing studies in boat building, marine trades and marine sciences. The awards come from donations from the PTYC membership and fund-raisers including the annual garage sale (October each year at the PTYC clubhouse).

The PTYC scholarship committee is now accepting applications for next year. Eligible applicants include residents of Jefferson County or an individual who will participate in a marine trades program located in Jefferson County.

Applications can be found on the PTYC website (PTYC.net). They are due by Feb. 6, 2024.

This year’s scholarship winners are:

Adeline Gellert DePalma, Port Townsend. She plans to attend a four- year university and continue her academic career in the fields of marine biology, oceanography and environmental science.

Amber Hocking. She works at the Northwest Maritime Center and is studying for a Coast Guard’s OUPV/Six Pack captain’s license through the U.S. Maritime Academy.

Elizabeth Palmer. She is studying the Marine Systems Program at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and plans to continue with this program.

Ellie Meopham. She has been a lead instructor and program coordinator at the Northwest Maritime Center. She is heading to the Maritime Learning System to gain a U.S. Coast Guard’s Master Captain’s License.

Kathryn Hoerauf. She has worked for seven years in the tall ship industry including the Schooner Adventuress. She will use this scholarship to add a degree in Environmental Science at Western States University.

Lorenzo McCleese of Port Townsend. He will be attending a four-year university to study environmental or earth science with emphasis on marine science.

Pearl Farley. She is a student at the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building and plans to finish her course of study to receive a Boatbuilding Associate of Occupational Degree.

Sebastian (Bastian) Rogowski. He plans to complete courses in both Boatbuilding and Marine Systems at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and make a much-needed contribution to our community as a craftsperson in the maritime trades

Stephanie Norman. She is currently working aboard the nonprofit Schooner Adventuress serving as Winter Mate and will be attending the STCW Basic training course at Compass Courses in Edmond.
