PT Pro-Am concert series to mix it up with jazz, fiddle

The Port Townsend Pro-Am of Music concert series is set to continue, this time heading to the Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery for a fiddle- and jazz-infused concert featuring talented local high-schoolers.

This performance takes a radical departure from the series’ classical roots, which featured mostly string chamber ensembles and violin soloists playing staples of the classical genre.

This Pro-Am concert will include both fiddle and jazz music, and the Port Townsend High School first-period band class will be playing a selection of jazz music as well as more modern fusion/rock selections.

The 10-piece ensemble most recently played at the Port Townsend Farmers Market.

Also performing will be high school members of the Port Townsend Fiddle Club. The fiddle club performs a variety of traditional fiddle tunes from around the world and is led by Peter McCracken, who also heads the Fiddle Tunes summer festival sponsored by Centrum at Fort Worden State Park.

Another feature in the concert is Grammy-nominated saxophonist Chris Miller.

Miller’s nomination came from 2015 album “Get Ready” with the Cajun/Zydeco group, The Revelers, from Louisiana.

Miller, a Port Townsend resident, splits his time between touring with The Revelers, playing with a wide range of musicians, and touring with his “groove-grass” trio The Faux Paws, who released their self-titled album in 2021 and received critical acclaim.

The upcoming performance is set for 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at The Palindrome, located at 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road.

Tickets cost $25 and can be bought at ptmusicboosters.org or email musicboosterspths@gmail.com or call 360-301-9816.

Funds raised from the Pro-Am of Music concert series support the planned spring 2023 trip to Los Angeles by the Port Townsend High School music department. The events are sponsored by the Port Townsend Music Boosters.

The final performance of the PT Pro-Am Concert Series will be held at the Northwest Maritime Center at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 and will feature the Port Townsend High School Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Matthew Daline.
