Pro-Am of Music concert series to raise funds for school trip to LA

Inaugural show to be held at Bishop Hotel

Professional musicians and students with the Port Townsend High School Symphony will come together for a series of performances to raise funds for the high school symphony’s planned trip to Los Angeles.

The concert series, officially known as the Port Townsend Pro-Am of Music, will kick off with an October show at the Bishop Hotel in downtown Port Townsend.

The series is sponsored by the Port Townsend Music Boosters to raise funds to send 85 high-school students on a trip to L.A. in 2023 to participate in a music clinic, public performances, and attend a Los Angeles Philharmonic performance.

The inaugural Pro-Am show starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Bishop and will feature high school student-musicians and professional players.

The opening half of the concert will feature the Rose Quartet — a string quartet with high school members Juniper Cervenka, Camryn Hines, Magdalene Ferland, and Adeline Gellert DePalma — performing works by composers Florence Price and Franz Schubert.

The second half will highlight homegrown violin talent Matthew Daline as he performs Mozart’s Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 21 in E minor. Daline will be accompanied by his wife Pei-Hsuan Chung on piano.

Daline and Chung recently relocated back to Port Townsend from Bowling Green, Ohio where they worked as professors of music at Bowling Green University. They currently perform professionally in the Pacific Northwest and have started their own personal music studios in Port Townsend.

The Port Townsend Music Boosters are planning four additional performances as part of the new concert series: Oct. 23 at the Port Townsend Vineyards; Nov. 6 at the Jefferson Museum of Art and History; Nov. 20 (location to be decided); and Dec. 4 at the Northwest Maritime Center.

Daline enjoys a versatile career as a violin/viola soloist and educator. He was the top prizewinner at the Artists International Competition in New York City, which provided a solo recital debut recital in Carnegie Hall. Since his viola debut in Carnegie Hall, he has performed worldwide as a soloist and recitalist.

Chung is in great demand as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. She has toured and performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist throughout North America and Asia. Chung is a versatile musician who performs numerous concerts with wide-ranging interests. Besides solo and chamber music performances, she enjoys teaching her studio piano class and arranging master classes at international venues.

Tickets for the Oct. 9 event cost $50 per person and can be purchased by calling 360-301-9816, emailing musicboosterspths@gmail.com, or visiting eventbrite.com/e/port-townsend-pro-am-of-music-bishop-hotel-oct-9th-tickets-425563159867?aff=ebdssbdestsearch.

Tickets include one glass of house wine and a cheese plate from the Bishop Block Bottle Shop and a meet-and-greet with the performers at the end of the show.
