The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 151 calls between Friday, May 5, and Thursday, May 11. Below are selected reports.

At 10 p.m. Monday, May 8, a welfare check was requested in the 400 block of West Sims Way for a man who appeared to be yelling and screaming inside the nearby grocery store.

The man appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, around 280 pounds, and was barefoot and carrying his shoes. He told the caller that someone was out to get him.

Officers spoke with the man, who said his feet hurt and he was screaming in pain due to how much it hurt to walk. He also added that he took a recent fall and hurt his ankle. Officers offered aid to the man, but he declined. He was advised that he could sit outside for the evening, and he wasn’t trespassed from the store due to no crimes being committed.

At 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the 800 block of Water Street, a concerned caller reported seeing a newborn deer on the beach behind a downtown business. The mother was nowhere to be seen, and the fawn was standing up and didn’t appear to be in distress. The caller was advised to leave the baby deer alone and let its mother come back.

At 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, a theft was reported at a trade school in the 200 block of Battery Way at Fort Worden. The theft occurred back in late April, with someone breaking into the building to steal items that included a heat pump and mountain bike. The total value of the stolen items was $2,400.

At 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, suspicious activity was reported in the 400 block of Sherman Street; a Subaru Legacy had been parked nearby over the weekend. Officers investigated the vehicle, noting that the car’s ignition had been punched and its plates were removed. The Subaru showed obvious signs of an attempted car theft. Officers searched the car in a database and attempted to contact its owner, who purchased the car in 2021. Police were unable to get ahold of the owner.

At 2:50 p.m. Wednesday,
May 10,
a dog bite was reported in the 1500 block of Hastings Avenue. The caller told police that the canine, a Walker bloodhound-type breed, bit the caller’s daughter in the face after getting overstimulated. The dog had no prior bites and is 7 or 8 years old.

The owner decided to surrender the canine to the shelter, and the dog was placed on a 10-day quarantine.

At 5:40 p.m. Wednesday,
May 10,
a theft was reported in the 800 block of Water Street after an employee said they saw a woman steal shoes.

Two women walked into the shop to purchase pants. The women paid for one item, but the employee noticed two pairs of shoes were missing after they’d left. The store didn’t have either woman’s name or any video of the suspected theft. An officer contacted the employee, who later said the missing shoes had been found. No crime occurred.

At 6:35 p.m. Wednesday,
May 10,
a DUI arrest was made at the Discovery Road and 24th Street intersection. Officers reported seeing a red Dodge vehicle driving south on Sheridan Street before turning into the oncoming lane and passing a police car at a high rate of speed. Officers stopped the car and eventually arrested the driver for being intoxicated. The driver had a 0.16 test result on a breathalyzer and was booked into jail.

At 6:35 p.m. Wednesday,
May 10,
at the intersection of F and San Juan streets, suspicious activity was reported involving a food truck.

The food truck’s trailer door was left open with the door’s deadbolt out of place. The door also showed signs of damage, and the food truck’s manager was advised of the damage.
