Port Townsend Police Log | Suspicious candle bearers

The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 151 calls between Friday, May 5, and Thursday, May 11. Below are selected reports.

At 12:15 a.m. Saturday, May 6,
a caller in the 1400 block of Chestnut Street reported hearing gunshots. The caller told police four or five pops resembling gunshots had been heard. Police were unable to hear or locate anyone shooting in the area.

At 8:15 p.m. Saturday, May 6, a traffic collision was reported in the 200 block of Taylor Street after a driver backed into an unoccupied vehicle downtown. Officers suspected the driver could be under the influence, and a blood alcohol test was completed. The woman had a breath test reading of 0.14, well over the legal limit of 0.08. She was charged with a DUI and booked into jail.

At 10:55 p.m. Saturday, May 6,
at the 19th and Grant streets intersection, suspicious activity was reported. Two women were seen carrying what appeared to be two large tubes with a large flame at the end. The two didn’t seem to be attempting to set anything on fire, and the tubes appeared to be large torches of some sort.

Officers contacted the women, noting that they were holding large candles. The two told officers they wanted to bring the candles home and light them. No crimes occurred and the women continued home.

At 3:15 p.m. Sunday, May 7, a suspected auto theft was reported near the Water and Quincy streets intersection.

A driver parked a silver Hyundai sedan on the street an hour prior, and couldn’t find it later.

The vehicle was locked and had a full tank of gas, and the driver’s purse was in the car. Officers searched the area, and a short time later, the sedan was located on Water Street with no signs of an attempted break-in or theft.

At 6:55 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Haines and 24th streets, suspicious activity was reported after a caller watched a truck drop off three teens at an unoccupied home. The caller told law enforcement that the teens appeared to run behind the home and out of view. Officers searched the property, and all points of entry appeared to be secure. There were no broken windows or doors, and the officers were unable to locate anyone on the property.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, a welfare check was requested in the 2400 block of West Sims Way for a man who appeared to be highly intoxicated.

The man was in the parking lot of a nearby cannabis store when officers located him. The man was advised not to drive, then was contacted later by police for his conduct toward an employee at the cannabis shop.

The man was trespassed from the property due to being intoxicated and acting inappropriately toward the employee. The man was given a ride home by a local outreach team.

At 1:50 p.m. Monday, May 8, in the 1900 block of Sheridan Street, a caller in California asked police to check on her aunt, who lives in town. The aunt is in her 60s and the caller was concerned about her living conditions. Officers contacted the aunt at her door, and she appeared fine and in good spirits. The woman had plenty of food and the officers left. Police contacted the California woman to tell her that the aunt was OK.

At 4 p.m. Monday, May 8, a caller reported a loud, barking dog in the 1300 block of Fir Street.

The caller told law enforcement that the canine barks daily and she’s attempted to call the neighbor about it multiple times. The woman was advised to call back when the barking occurs for officers to investigate.
