The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 172 calls between Friday,
March 24, and Thursday,
March 30. Below are selected reports.

At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, in the 400 block of West Sims Way, a theft attempt occurred at a grocery store. An officer was at the business and noticed a man enter the store. Recognizing the man and knowing he is battling an alcohol addiction, the officer followed the man and witnessed him stuff a bottle of vodka in his pocket while in the shop. The officer confronted him, and the man admitted he intended to steal the booze. He was arrested for theft and was intoxicated, blowing a .253 during the breathalyzer test.

At 9:55 a.m. Tuesday,
March 28, a suspicious donation was left at a used merchandise store in the 1500 block of Franklin Street. Employees reported a rifle and scope that were left in a dropbox overnight, and the employees wanted the police to pick up the items. Officers met with an employee and determined the rifle was a pellet gun and not a real firearm.

At 11:50 p.m. Tuesday,
March 28, in the 200 block of Gaines Street, a suspicious man was reportedly checking out kayaks in the area. When officers arrived in the area, a resident approached and said, “some sketchy guy is creeping around looking at our kayaks.” Officers searched the area but didn’t locate the suspect. Later on, officers received a DUI call in the 2100 block of Washington Street. A security officer at a nearby marina informed police of a suspicious green Ford Expedition driving in the area and headed downtown. The officers searched at a downtown bank, and a man in a green Ford Expedition pulled up to the police cruiser. The driver got out to talk to the officers, and while they were speaking, the man said he wanted to do pushups and air squats. The officers noted seeing open alcohol bottles and smoking pipes inside the man’s vehicle. One of the pipes had black residue inside and looked like a meth pipe. The man admitted to knowing about the open booze container in his car, but denied knowing what was in the glass pipe. The man agreed to do field sobriety tests and the officers determined the man was under the influence of narcotics, likely methamphetamine. The man admitted to smoking meth and he was booked into jail for driving under the influence.

At 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, a welfare check was requested by a neighbor in the 1000 block of Hancock Street after they heard a woman screaming. The neighbor thought it was someone in another apartment, and officers arrived to investigate. The officers located an older woman who’d fallen down and was wedged between the wall and her bed. Assistance from the fire department was requested, and emergency services got the woman out safely.

At 8:20 a.m. Wednesday,
March 29, in the 1900 block of Blaine Street, a caller informed law enforcement of a man inside a port-a-potty in the area. The caller was worried about the man, and thought he might be sleeping or passed out. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the man.

At 10:40 a.m. Wednesday,
March 29, a propeller theft was reported in the 2600 block of Washington Street at the marina. The reporting party told police that $30,000 worth of boat propellers were stolen overnight off a pallet under someone’s boat. The case is currently under investigation.

At 7:55 a.m. Thursday,
March 30, at a coffee shop in the 1100 block of Water Street, a man was reported harassing employees in the store and smashing glass outside the shop. The employee requested the man be trespassed for his behavior, and the man has a history of harassment at the shop.

At 8:25 a.m. Thursday,
March 30, the same man from a previous police call involving a green Ford Expedition was reported for erratic riding at the West Sims Way and Hancock Street intersection. A caller told police they’d seen a rider passing people at a high rate of speed and headed downtown. Officers located the rider near the Thomas Street roundabout, and the man was seen almost losing control of the bike. The rider was contacted by police, and officers determined the man was under the influence of narcotics. He was booked for DUI.
