Port of Port Townsend’s 100-year history project seeks help

The Port of Port Townsend marks its 100th year in 2024. It was formed by Jefferson County voters in 1924.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Port has hired former Leader publisher Scott Wilson to research and write a book of that history.

Even with historical records reviewed and interviews conducted, Wilson seeks information, contacts or photos about some of the Port’s activities and people. These include:

- A photo of the “Nordland” ferry that once served Indian and Marrowstone islands before 1951.

- Photos of the process of filling the Kah Tai Lagoon area, either when the first Boat Haven was built in 1935, or when the marina was expanded in 1964.

- Photos and information about the early years of the Quilcene marina.

- Photos and information about the early years of the Jefferson County International Airport.

- Period photos of the earliest days of the Boat Haven, such as Skookum Marine or the PT Boatworks, in the late 1960s to 1970s.

- Period photos of those who arrived at Point Hudson in the mid-1970s and, in 1977, started the Wooden Boat Festival.

- Photos of these people:

Harley and Bertha Horton, the first lessees of Point Hudson and operators of a Boat Haven grocery store.

Lt. Col. Fred McIlroy, last commander of Fort Worden and Port commissioner in the 1950s.

Julian Oen of Quilcene, Port commissioner and Port manager in the 1960s.

George Randolph, Port manager in the 1970s.

George Rowley, Sr. or his boat, Bowlyn at Point Hudson.

Cecil Lange and his boat shop.

Shipwrights at work from the 1970s to 1980s.

Bill Sperry, who built buildings at the Boat Haven.
