A power outage on the morning of Monday, Dec. 4, affected customers of the Jefferson County Public Utility District in the South County area around Port Ludlow, and extended along South Point Road, south of Highway 104.
Jameson Hawn, digital communications specialist for the Jefferson County PUD, told The Leader that 2,044 PUD customers were without power starting at 7 a.m.
“The cause was a branch across the primary distribution lines,” Hawn said. “Our grid features equipment designed to protect itself when something contacts distribution and transmission lines, typically a branch, or when something damages a utility pole.”
Hawn elaborated that the PUD’s grid-protection equipment is noticeable when lights flash multiple times.
“This is the system testing to see if the object has cleared the line,” Hawn said. “If the object remains, the substation protections kick in, and what’s known as a ‘re-closer’ opens, causing the outage.”
The Port Ludlow outage was cleared and by 7:55 a.m.
