More disruption, changes with SR 104 improvements

The intersection of Beaver Valley Road and State Route 104 is currently ‘right in-right out’ as crews have begun construction on the SR 104 roundabout project. Summer travelers wanting to make left turns at this intersection will have to detour to Center Road. A temporary traffic signal will operate at Center Road during this portion of the project.

In June, all access to SR 19 (Beaver Valley Road) from SR 104 will close for 21 days. During this time, all traffic will have to take the same detour at Center Road.

This project will also cause short-term closures of access to Shine Road and Paradise Bay Road. All highway closures will be announced in advance.

During construction, travelers can expect to see intermittent single-lane closures at night. These closures are permitted only between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Crews will maintain one lane in both directions as much as possible.

Later in the summer, crews are scheduled to begin roundabout construction at the intersection of SR 104 and Paradise Bay-Shine Road. Plans call for a single-lane metered roundabout. Once complete, the meter will be active only after a closure at the Hood Canal Bridge.

Crews began work on May 13. The $11 million project is slated for completion in May 2025.

The intersection of SR104 and Paradise Bay-Shine Road Jefferson County has a history of serious-injury collisions. Nearly 17,000 vehicles and semis travel the route each day, as it is one of two highways on or off the Olympic Peninsula. Washington State Department of Transportation officials say the roundabouts are intended to regulate traffic flow and reduce the severity of collisions, particularly head-on collisions.

To see a video of the metered roundabout in action, go to the WSDOT ‘SR 104 - Paradise Bay - Shine Road & SR 19 - Intersection Safety Improvements’ web page and click on ‘Related Links.’

The video shows current traffic flow along with a computer generated sequence of traffic flow after the metered roundabout is installed.

Meanwhile, WSDOT has cancelled scheduled overnight closures of the Hood Canal Bridge thru Fri., May 31. Contractor crews completed work on the shock absorbers on the south side of the bridge ahead of schedule. Overnight closures will resume Mon., June 3. The bridge will close at 10 p.m. every night that week through (and including) Sat., June 8.
