The Port Ludlow Community Church is planning to present a benefit concert featuring cellist Pamela Roberts and pianist Sung-Ling Hsu on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The concert is free, with donations accepted at the door, to benefit the nonprofit “Apple of His Eye” Charity in Rwanda.

“Apple of His Eye” provides holistic care to Rwandans through a sponsorship program and other projects, such as water wells, housing, vocational training, counseling and nutritional programs.

Donations from the Port Ludlow concert will help the nonprofit build a recreational playground for young students and their families.

“This benefit concert is a wonderful reason to come together, and to be reminded of how blessed we are in so many ways,” said Pastor Kevin Hall. “Pam and Sung-Ling have planned a beautiful, international program for us to enjoy, as we collectively support this worthy Rwandan project.”

Roberts completed her graduate studies at the University of Washington, and was a faculty cellist at the University of Puget Sound, as well as the principal cellist of the Tacoma Symphony and a fellowship recipient at the Aspen Music Festival.

Roberts performed as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Port Townsend and Bremerton Westsound symphonies, and as a chamber musician. She also worked with the Philadelphia String Quartet, the Northwest Chamber Orchestra and the Seattle Early Music Guild.

Roberts lives in Quilcene with her husband, Howard Gilbert, a retired Seattle Symphony percussionist and jazz drummer. She serves as the principal cellist in the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra, as well as an artistic director of the PTSO’s Chamber Music Series.

Hsu immigrated from Keelung, Taiwan, to the United States in 2014, making her home in Quilcene and becoming an American citizen in 2022.

Hsu started learning piano at the age of 6, before entering a special class for the musically gifted and talented at the age of 8, when she also started learning the viola.

Hsu became a pianist at the Keelung Assembly of God Church at the age of 10, before majoring in composition while studying at Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan.

Hsu has worked in scoring and sound effects design, composing music and producing sound effects for video games, films and TV commercials.

Hsu played viola in the Bremerton and Port Angeles symphonies, and is currently the principal violist in the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra, and is a founding member of the Chamber Music Series.

Hsu is a pianist at the Port Ludlow Community Church, and an accompanist of the Choral Belles.

The duo will perform the Cello Sonata No. 2 in A minor, Op. 81 by Nikolai Myaskovsky, “From Jewish Life” by Ernest Bloch, Guitarre by Moritz Moszkowski, Sicilienne by Maria-Theresia von Paradis and Prelude No. 2 by George Gershwin, the latter two transcribed by Orfeo Mandozzi.

The Aug. 3 concert starts at 6 p.m. at the church, at 9534 Oak Bay Rd. in Port Ludlow.

Tickets are not required but seating is limited. There will be a short reception after the concert.
