Hood Canal Bridge to be closed overnight for drawspan repairs

Posted

The Hood Canal Bridge will be closed for four hours overnight later this month so bridge maintenance crews can make repairs, the Washington State Department of Transportation has announced.

The span will be shut down from 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 to 2 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

Travelers who use the Highway 104 bridge between the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas will need to plan for overnight delays, WSDOT officials said.

Bridge crews will finalize temporary repairs to the system that guides and connects the drawspans together, noted Doug Adamson of WSDOT.

The upcoming work requires crews to secure industrial-sized bumpers to the areas where the bridge’s halves come together.

“Our crews did the lion’s share of that work last December. We needed warmer weather to complete this portion of the work,” Adamson added.

Permanent repairs are planned for summer 2021.

Crews could extend the length of the closure to traffic, depending on work progress, according to WSDOT.

The work is subject to weather and tidal activity.
