Geology talk by Dr. Darrel Cowan, "Vancouver Island and an Alaskan Island were neighbors 50 Million Years Ago"

Posted by PT42Sq

Dr. Cowan (Emeritus Professor, University of Washington Department of Earth and Space Sciences) will discuss the evolution of the theory that large slabs of the Earth's crust, known as "terranes," were displaced up to a thousand miles northward along the western margin of North America. He will present the geological evidence he published in 1982, which links Vancouver Island with Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska. The pioneering "Baja British Columbia" hypothesis continues to be a subject of ongoing study and debate.

This IN-PERSON ONLY talk will start at 4 PM on Saturday, September 14, 2024. It is free and open to the public. (Donations gratefully welcomed at the door.) It will take place at the First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St, Port Townsend, WA 98368 (entrance in the back). The talk will be recorded and posted shortly after the presentation, as are all Quimper Geological Society events since 2020.
