First Presbyterian celebrates 150 years

Posted

The current congregation of First Presbyterian Port Townsend invites the community to participate in their fall celebrations capping the Sesquicentennial commemoration of their first 150 years of service in Port Townsend.

Seven women chartered the First Presbyterian Church on March 8, 1873, and $250 in gold coin was raised to purchase the lot at the corner of Franklin and Polk.

All are invited for a series of occasions where our historic uptown Presbyterians will combine looking to the past with their continued commitment to lead into the future. Noteworthy occasions include:

November 11 - 2 p.m. Organ Concert - Tom Stahl of Port Ludlow will perform works from Bach, Mason, César Franck, Boëllmann and others on the 1890 Whalley & Genung Tracker Organ, the oldest organ in Washington state still in its original location.

November 12 – 9:30 a.m. Special Worship Service – Lead by Pastor Paul Heins, the sermon will be shared by the Rev.Tim Dolan, the church’s pastor in the 1990’s. A 150th Anniversary Quilt will be presented by the "Prayers & Squares" quilting team. The service will be followed by an English Tea (advance reservations are requested: welcome@fpcpt.org).

November 26 - 10:45a.m. “On the Home Front… The War Years in Port Townsend” will cover the importance of Fort Townsend in the 1859 Pig War confrontation between the United States and the United Kingdom, the “Triangle of Fire” through two World Wars, and today’s Naval Magazine Indian Island, as seen from the pews of Port Townsend Presbyterian.
