Firefighter retires from East Jefferson after 33 years

Firefighters are known for their dedication to the fire service, working 24-hour shifts, responding to fires, saving lives and protecting property.

Rolf Schumann of East Jefferson Fire & Rescue is retiring after 33 years taking on lead roles that include  Marine Services Manager and EMT Senior Lead Instructor for the County.

Former Fire Chief Gordon Pomeroy said Rolf has “seen a lot” through all his years of service. Pomeroy stated that one of his memories of Rolf was when he single-handedly saved the life of former Quilcene Fire Chief Moe Moser who was severely injured in a head-on collision several years ago.

“He was a dedicated firefighter and very good at teaching the EMT class and working with newly-hired firefighters,” Pomeroy said.

Commissioner Deb Tillman recalled Rolf’s “helpful, kind and supportive” approach in his role as EMT Senior Lead.

“He was very involved with the Marine Service program when he worked with the Port Townsend Fire Department and subsequently instrumental in putting East Jefferson’s Marine program together. He was one of the first paramedics hired by EJFR,” Commissioner Tillman recalls.

Firefighters who have worked alongside Rolf have referred to him as “Mr. Dependable” and praised his willingness to work overtime on numerous occasions through the years.

“EMS was his passion, for sure. He made me want to become a paramedic,” said MSO Tammy Ridgway. “He’s definitely left big shoes to fill. He was very calm on calls…and set a good example for others.”

Steve Craig, Current EJFR Fire Commissioner and Former EJFR Assistant Chief, said Rolf was “full of energy and hard-working…Rolf deserves my thanks for investing in me and helping shape me for a career in the fire service. Rolf and others were good examples to younger firefighters to move forward in the fire department.”

Craig added that Rolf was one of the first full-time paramedics in Jefferson County, worked with the City of Port Townsend Fire Department and worked with the hospital. “People like Rolf have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the world of firefighters.”

“Rolf never complained,” said Paramedic Brennan Whiting. “He was always calm and very much a team player.”
