The Jefferson County Historical Society plans to present "From Ashes to Archives" at the Northwest Maritime Center from 7-8:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, for a suggested donation fee. Alexandra Toombs, director of development and communications for the Historical Society, promised the evening would delve into how the grounds of Memorial Field once hosted “a vibrant neighborhood, bustling with Chinese and Chinese-American residents and businesses,” where “families flourished and businesses thrived, shaping the cultural and economic fabric of Port Townsend.”

Toombs noted that portion of the area’s history came to an end in 1900, when “a devastating fire ravaged the area, leaving behind ashes and disrupting countless lives.”

Attendees of the April 20 “From Ashes to Archives” presentation will be able to explore new research, shedding light on the individuals impacted by the catastrophic fire of 1900.

“Discover the intricacies of the research process, engage directly with primary source materials, and depart with a deeper understanding of this historic event, and its profound significance in shaping the identity of our city,” Toombs said.

Ruth Kodish-Eskind, the “Diversity in Local History” intern at JCHS, and a recent graduate of Evergreen State College in Olympia, will lead the presentation.

“With a keen focus on local history and cultural exploration, Ruth brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the discussion, enriching our understanding of Port Townsend's vibrant past,” Toombs said.
