The East Jefferson Rivals boys and girls wrestling teams kicked off their winter seasons, starting with a jamboree event in Port Angeles and a tournament in Forks.

Starting with the Port Angeles jamboree on Nov. 30, the Rivals brought 18 grapplers to face athletes from Forks High School, Port Angeles High School, and Sequim High School.

The EJ wrestlers had 33 shortened, 3-minute matchups to break the offseason rust.

The Rivals ended the jamboree with an overall record of 17-16, with the girls showing out with nine wins, four losses, and one tie.

Standout girls included Mi Amada Lanphear Ramirez (two pins), Chloe Lampert (two pins), Melody Douglas (two pins), Ivy Hill (one pin), and Serena Hanbey-Perless (one pin). Boys with victories included Beau Manuel (two pins), Lars Wakefield (one pin), and Gabe Evans (won by points). Three freshmen — Rylen Kruse, Rylan Dunn, and Manaseh Lanphear Ramirez — started off their careers with wins via pins at the jamboree.

Following the Port Angeles jamboree, the wrestling teams made their way through the slush and snow to Forks Saturday, Dec. 3 for the first wrestling tournament of the season.

Six girls and eight boys represented EJ at the event, with the girls team showing out and claiming first place in the tourney.

The girls earned
51.5 points overall with three female champions. Lanphear Ramirez won the 120-pound division, Lampert took the 125-pound division, and winning the 155-pound weight class was Douglas.

Due to illness and injury, the boys team was limited in numbers yet still managed to snag a fourth place finish out of seven squads in the tournament. The high mark for the boys was Sam Lampert finishing in second place for the 170-pound weight class.

“We are very fortunate to have a few families with multiple kids on our team this year,” said EJ Assistant Boys Coach Ryan White. “This weekend both Sam and Chloe Lampert wrestled exceptionally well.”

“It was a great start to a promising season for many of our athletes,” White added.

The Rivals wrestling teams currently have 32 grapplers registered for the sport, including nine girls.

Next up for the EJ wrestling teams is the first of two home meets for the season on Wednesday, Dec. 7 versus Klahowya Secondary School at the Port Townsend High School gym.
