Constantine's art is about creativity: Mixed-media works chosen for international publication

Marrowstone Island resident Kathy Constantine recently had two of her works selected for publication in "Incite 4: Relax, Restore, Renew," which is to be released in October.

“It's kind of a risk to put your work out,” Constantine said. “It takes a lot courage to put what comes out of your mind and your heart into the world.”

However, she recognizes the benefits that come from doing so. “It's good for an artist's résumé,” she said. “It's also helpful for establishing your credibility as an artist.”

"Incite" is an art book dedicated to the best of mixed media. Artists from around the world can submit their works with the possibility of being published.

“It's like an international competition,” Constantine said. Some of her works were also published in the 2013 and 2015 editions of "Incite."

Constantine considers herself to be an experimental artist. She works with mixed media, which includes various mediums such as acrylics, pastels and stained glass. Constantine also uses other items such as fabrics and old newspapers in her projects.

She also creates art clocks, mixed-media kimonos, sculptures and digital collages.

“I like to play with the materials and see where it leads me,” she said. “I just tend to follow ideas.”

Her art typically depicts figurative birds, animals or human figures. Some of her works are also inspired by places she has traveled to, such as Spain and Hawaii.

She identifies her mother as a source for her interest in art. Constantine started an art club at age 10, but didn't take up the practice full-time until she retired from working with an ad agency about five years ago.

Now, Constantine practices art almost daily, creating pieces inside a workshop her husband built. After its construction, she once stayed inside for eight hours straight while working on a new project.

“I've always had to have a creative outlet,” she said. “I think of it as creativity more than art, in a way.”

Her works have also been featured in local galleries, such as Gallery 9 and Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, and Bainbridge Arts and Crafts on Bainbridge Island.

Constantine also teaches mixed-media classes to small groups of students in the Port Townsend area.

At the end of the day, Constantine just “wants to have fun.”
