Bridgerton burlesque befalls Key City

Dearest gentle reader, prepare for a night of debauched body positivity and uplifting sisterly sensuality.

The Sky Dancers, a local performance group, are bringing a “Bridgerton”-inspired burlesque and variety show to the Key City Theatre in Port Townsend on Sunday, Aug. 21 sponsored by Soundcheck.

“Bridgerton” is an American historical-romance television series based on Seattle author Julia Quinn’s collection of novels. It revolves around the eponymous Bridgerton family in the competitive world of London’s social season during the early 1800s where marriageable youth of nobility and gentry are launched into society, with the unique historical rewrite that allows people of color a chance to play characters that thrive within the melodrama.

The Sky Dancers are made up of four regular performers that typically showcase classic burlesque, belly dancing, aerial and pole dancing, and in some cases they are joined by a fifth who works in comedic skits, with all of it tied together by a theme.

“This will be our fifth performance,” said Jade Evans, organizer, founder, and performer for Indigo Sky Productions.

Previous themes have included a Spring celebration of the Divine Feminine, a Valentine’s show at Finnriver, and the group is working on a Halloween theme for this October.

The group makes sure to note that consent and respect are of the utmost importance. While they welcome tips, they ask that money not be thrown at them or on the ground and firmly state that no performer should ever be touched unless it has been arranged beforehand as part of an act and agreed to by all parties involved.

Some performers may choose to go topless if they are comfortable doing so, but will remain in pasties which cover the nipples. At Sky Dancer shows, there are often suggestive and sexy outfits, but there will not be full-on nudity.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up for the theme, but it is not necessary for entry.
