Benefit concert takes a tour of European classics

Port Ludlow Community Church will host a benefit concert for Rwanda next week.

Cellist Pamela Roberts and pianist Sung-Ling Hsu will perform at the show, planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22 at the church.

Roberts and Hsu will present the program, “A European Musical Stroll,” with pieces from France, Germany, Finland, Austria, Russia, and Estonia. Donations will be accepted at the door with all proceeds going to the Apple of His Eye Charity in Rwanda.

Tickets are not required and seating is limited. There will be a short reception after the concert.

Apple of His Eye Charity is a nonprofit that provides holistic care to Rwandans through a sponsorship program and other projects such as water wells, housing, vocational training, counseling and nutritional programs. Donations from the Port Ludlow concert will help the nonprofit build a hall for counseling and educational purposes.

“This benefit concert is a wonderful reason to come together and to be reminded of how blessed we are in so many ways,” said Pastor Kevin Hall.

“Pam and Sung-Ling are making a generous contribution through their musical talents,” Hall added. “We get to listen to great music, socialize with friends and neighbors, and do it all in support of a valuable cause to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We hope you will consider joining us on July 22,” he added.

Roberts graduated from the University of Washington. Her primary teachers were Eva Heinitz and Toby Saks, and Roberts was faculty cellist at the University of Puget Sound and a fellowship recipient at the Aspen Music Festival. She is also principal cellist in the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra and an artistic director of the orchestra’s Chamber Music Series.

Hsu was originally from Taiwan and immigrated to the United States in 2014. She started learning the piano at the age of 6, majoring in composition while studying at university. After graduating, she worked in scoring and sound effects design. Hsu is currently devoted to chamber music and is a founding member of the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series. She is also a pianist at Port Ludlow Community Church.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity not only to enjoy an afternoon of beautiful cello and piano music, but to help make our world a better place in the process,” Roberts said. “We all have much to give and this concert brings together our collective power to help this important Rwandan project. I hope you can join us,” she said.
