Arrow found; goose is gone, all well for now

The tale of Walter, a Canada goose spotted at North Beach with an arrow in its back end, appears to have ended well.

"This was a very happy ending," said Cindy Daily of the Discovery Bay Wildlife Rescue, who reported on Monday that she had received a call from a family that had found an arrow that apparently had been stuck in the goose, nicknamed Walter by the family, which also first reported its woes.

"It's remarkable that he was able to pull it out for himself," Daily said.

Daily had noted she been out a number of times last week hoping to capture the goose, which had been spotted at North Beach and Fort Worden State Park.

On Friday, Daily said, she saw a goose that was limping, but it wasn't until Saturday that the family that first reported the injured bird discovered the arrow, she said.

"They said they found the entire arrow," Daily said of Tim and Kirsten Behrenfeld and family.

In an email to the North Beach community, the Behrenfelds said they came to the conclusion that perhaps the goose had managed to remove the arrow.

"After a long search, we discovered an arrow with the same coloration at the water's edge very near where the goose (we have named him Walter after the name of William Tell's son) was standing at the north end of the lagoon," an email from the Behrenfelds read.

They also noted that people might want to keep an eye on the bird to monitor its progress - just in case.

Daily cares for a variety of wild birds with injuries. Most people bring them to her, she said. But she will help with larger birds, like the wounded goose. Daily can be reached at 360-643-0056.

In an earlier email last week that was distributed to the North Beach community and forwarded to the Leader, Kirsten, Akeyla and Tusker Behrenfeld said they spotted the goose "with an arrow completely through its body."

They said the arrow was "protruding out of the breast of the goose."

"The goose was upright and making attempts at pecking at the arrow by its breast."

Daily said many people in Port Townsend were on the lookout for it and she, too, was concerned about it.

But by Monday, it appeared all was well, and the tale of Walter has ended for now.

"It's remarkable that [the goose] was able to pull [the arrow] out for himself."
