Author Kelly Milner Halls has been quoted as saying, "I get paid for being weird!" On Friday, Oct. 14, Halls shares her "weirdness" with students in grades 3-5 at Chimacum schools. After her school visits, Halls presents an all-ages public talk at 3:45 p.m. at the Jefferson County Library.

A writer for young readers, Halls admits, "I'd always been the weird kid – the kid who asked too many questions, the kid who couldn't stop talking to her neighbors, the kid who couldn't find a book she wanted to read."

Fifteen years ago, Halls – a single mom from Spokane who has a 4-foot-long pet rock iguana named Gigantor – began writing books for kids, and now has 40 titles to her credit, mostly "keeping science fun" nonfiction. Tackling high-interest topics such as strange animals, aliens, mummies, dinosaurs and ghosts, she hooks even reluctant young readers and helps them strengthen their critical-thinking skills.

Halls' visit is sponsored by the Friends of the Jefferson County Library and the Chimacum School District. The Jefferson County Library is located at 620 Cedar Ave. in Port Hadlock. All library events are free, and all ages are welcome. For more information, visit jclibrary.info or call 385-6544.
