Walk to End Alzheimer coming Saturday to Port Townsend

Posted

Residents are invited to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s this weekend.

The event is planned for Saturday, Sept. 17 at Pope Marine Park in Port Townsend.

On the day of the walk, participants will honor those affected by Alzheimer’s by holding the Promise Garden ceremony, which is meant to signify people’s solidarity in the fight against the disease. Organizers said the colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s and their personal reasons to end the disease.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. when participants will have an opportunity to meet with sponsors and exhibitors, learn about local resources, and grab a quick snack before the event starts. They can also pick up and personalize their Promise Garden flower prior to the opening ceremony, which starts at 11 a.m.

Alzheimer’s disease is a leading cause of death in the United States, and more than 6 million Americans are living with the disease. In Washington alone, there are more than 120,000 people living with the disease and 297,000 caregivers.
