Training sessions announced for docents

Posted

The Port Townsend Marine Science Center will host two upcoming training sessions for new docent volunteers at the center’s exhibits.

The three-part training sessions will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7 and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 10 with a tour of the exhibits.

Volunteers will meet in the museum classroom across from the pier.

Docents help guide inquiry and wonder at the center’s exhibits, while also sharing information about the Salish Sea’s nearshore habitat and the impact of human activity on the ecology of the region.

Advanced scientific knowledge isn’t needed for the role, center officials said, but a willingness to learn and to engage with the general public is crucial.

People with science backgrounds, customer service, or teaching experience are encouraged to attend, but the training is open to anyone with an interest in  the conservation of the Salish Sea.

Training will be led by the center’s staff. Online resources and additional opportunities for learning in the aquarium and museum exhibits will be available to all who attend the training.

According to the nonprofit center, opportunities for docents will soon expand to three days a week, when the museum opens up to visitors from noon to 5 p.m. Fridays, an additional day to the current Saturday/Sunday schedule.
