Tough decision looms on raising tax levies | Letter to the editor

I’m not sure how I’ll vote regarding the proposed large increase in fire and emergency services levies.

My EMS/fire taxes have already increased 38 percent because of the recent 38 percent increase in the assessment of my house. The Feb. 14 levies, if passed, will increase those taxes another 48 percent (per $1,000 of assessed value, EMS plus fire taxes will increase from, in dollars, 36 cents plus 85 cents up to 50 cents plus $1.30, respectively, meaning that the combined EMS and fire taxes will increase from $1.21 up to $1.80 per $1,000 of assessed value).

Prior to last night, the answer was decided. My EMS/fire taxes just increased 38 percent, so I’ll vote no to another 48 percent increase. But last night, at the town hall meeting held in Port Ludlow, Fire Chief Black said they still need the levy increase because of past underfunding, increased numbers of calls, and the need to hire more firefighters. The firefighters, paramedic, CARE personnel, and the commissioner at the meeting appeared professional and sincere.

I’ve always voted yes to raise EMS/fire levies when they’ve been requested because EMS and fire are such critical services, but this year’s housing assessment increase was huge. I wish the impact of that assessment increase had been discussed more. As of this letter writing, I’m torn as to how I’ll vote on the levy.
