'Top Secret': a first for improv theater

Posted

Expect to see, and join if desired, guerrilla theater to the max in “Top Secret: The Ultimate Audience Improv,” which runs Fridays and Saturdays, May 18-19 and May 25-26 at the Chameleon Theater in Port Townsend.

“Expect the unexpected this time,” said director Joey Pipia.

The four performances are a first for Port Townsend, said Pipia, and maybe a first in improv theater anywhere. For the final improv act of each night, the audience leaves the theater and reconvenes 10 minutes later at a previously undisclosed public location (drawn from a hat each night). At the secret location, volunteers from the audience can take part in a “secret improv mission.”

“I think this is the Chairs’ finest moment,” said Pipia.

There’s something special every night of the two-weekend run, as the Chairs perform different improv structures each night; no two evening formats are the same. Come to all four and see four completely different shows, said Pipia.

The Improvathon

The second weekend, May 25-26, of “Top Secret” is part of the fourth annual Improvathon.

This event is 24 hours of nonstop improvisation – just for the fun of it.

All are invited to watch or join the improvisation. No experience is necessary. Some people come for an hour, some spend the night, said Pipia.

At press time, slated guests include folks from Kitsap County, the Portable Reality Show, the resident improv troupe from the Jewel Box Theatre in Poulsbo, Courageous Acts improv artists from Port Townsend and, of course, the Chairs, who present “Top Secret: The Ultimate Audience Improv.”

The Chairs are Jae Dvorak, Misha Cassella-Blackburn, Solomon Dusseljee and Katherine Atkins. The troupe is invitation only and dedicated to performance improvisation.

Director Pipia teaches a style of acting and improvisation using what he describes as “the best of several masters” to create a unique experience for his actors and the audience.
