State abandons plan for full shutdown of Hood Canal Bridge on weekends this summer

The Hood Canal Bridge will not shut down for four weekends this summer for bridge repairs.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has abandoned plans to shut the span down for bridge repairs for four consecutive weekends in July and August.

State officials said the repair work will be done at night in May, June, and September.

Local officials, business owners, residents, and others had roundly criticized the earlier plan to close the bridge from Friday through Sundays during the summer tourism season.

Some said the shutdown to all traffic would cripple East Jefferson's economy as it emerges from the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Work on the floating bridge that links Jefferson County to Kitsap County will now start May 13.

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced its change in plans Monday afternoon.
