Sports wrap: Rangers eye undefeated league volleyball season

The Quilcene volleyball team has two SeaTac League opponents in their path to an undefeated regular season, while the Chimacum volleyball team is pushing for a playoff berth. In Chimacum this Saturday, the Cowboys host a boys' tennis tourney, and the CHS girls host Port Townsend for soccer. Here's the sports wrap as of Oct. 17:

VOLLEYBALL

CHIMACUM

Gathering momentum after a slow start to the season, the Cowboys (3-3 league, 6-6 overall) began a week of strong performances with a 25-12, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13 victory over non-league opponent 1B Crescent, Oct. 10 at home. A decisive first set allowed coach James Shingleton to send in varsity reserves for the remainder of the game. Too many service errors caused the second set to slip away, but the spikers regained their advantage to take the final two sets, with Renee Woods, Ericka Lindgren and Sophia Clemmons leading the way with service points.

The following night the Lady Cowboys dominated Port Townsend at home, shutting down the Redhawks 25-14, 25-16, 25-13. Mechelle Nisbet tallied 11 service points in the first set and Woods added 7 service points in the second. Shanya Nisbet led the team with 11 kills and 17 digs, and Taylor Carthum had an outstanding night with 23 assists.

Avenging an earlier 3-0 loss, Chimacum scored an impressive home victory over Klahowya on Senior Night, Oct. 13, outscoring the Eagles 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23.

“Under the senior leadership of Carthum, Shanya Nisbet and Mechelle Nisbet, Chimacum had their best game of the season so far,” said Shingleton. “After our last loss to Klahowya we knew we needed to set the pace early, and we had our libero back that we didn’t have in the first game against them.”

CHS struggled early in the third set with serve receive passing, but managed to come back and take a short-lived lead. “The fourth set saw many exchanges in the lead between the two teams,” added Shingleton. “Carthum made smart sets to our outside hitters that led us to victory in that set.”

Emily Thomas led the team in kills, Lindgren and Shanya Nisbet both were outstanding on defense, and Kayla Gates contributed at the net with 6 blocks.

Playoffs begin Nov. 1, with a play-in match in Coupeville between Olympic League No. 3 finisher and Nisqually League No. 4. The Oct. 24 matchup with Klahowya could determine if Chimacum gets an automatic seed to a Nov. 3 game against Nisqually No. 3 or needs a play-in game victory to reach post-season play.

NEXT: At Klahowya 6:15 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24; at Coupeville 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25; conclude regular season at Port Townsend, 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27.

QUILCENE

Quilcene (9-0 league, 12-0 overall) had its streak of shutout wins end, but overcame Evergreen Lutheran (6-34, 8-3) in five sets Oct. 11 to continue undefeated.

If the Rangers maintain their position as SeaTac League leader, the first playoff game is Nov. 5 at Crescent High School in Joyce.

NEXT: Host winless Northwest Yeshiva 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19; at fourth-place Mount Rainier Lutheran 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24 to end regular season.

PORT TOWNSEND

The Redhawks (0-5, 2-8) fell to Chimacum on Oct. 11, 25-14, 25-16, 25-13. The Oct. 13 match against Kingston was canceled due to weather-related issues, and will be played at a date to be determined.

GIRLS' SOCCER

CHIMACUM

PT is currently third in the Olympic League standings. The league’s No. 3 finisher will face the Nisqually League No. 4 in a 1A West Central District play-in game in Silverdale, Thursday, Oct. 27, with the winner advancing to play the Nisqually No. 2 team on Saturday, Oct. 29.

CROSS-COUNTRY

One team victory and good individual efforts marked the Redhawks’ Oct. 12 meet against 2A Bremerton and Port Angeles on a 3-loop, 2-mile course in Bremerton. The junior varsity boys captured their race with 21 points, outscoring PA (41) and the Knights (81). PT was led by the freshman race winner Nathan Cantrell (12:32) and Seamus Fraser (3rd overall, 13:16).

The varsity boys were edged by PA, 32-34, and were paced by Brennan LaBrie (2nd, 11:13) and Jesus Duran (5th, 11:52).

The varsity girls did not have enough athletes for a team score. Five runners are required, but academic obligations and minor injury reduced the girls to four competitors, according to coach Alice Fraser. Anika Avelino led the squad (4th, 14:10) and Ally Bradley was second (5th overall, 14:50).

The Westside Classic on Oct. 29 determines who advances to the 1A State Championship meet in Pasco on Nov. 5. Six teams are entered, and the top finisher, plus 7 individuals, will move ahead.

NEXT: Olympic League Championships at the Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim, 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20; Westside Classic at American Lake Veterans Golf Course, Tacoma, Saturday, Oct. 29.
