Some vintage cars, a dose of irony about newer ones, and some music | Life in Ludlow

Where do you go to see two Porsche 356s, two vintage Chevy Corvettes, one Ford GT, a Mercedes Benz SL, and a Porsche 911 Cabriolet? The East Jefferson Rotary car show last Saturday in the parking lots adjacent to the Port Ludlow Yacht Club.

The cars were just the beginning of a nice day supporting the work of the Rotary Club. A woman from Silverdale who is a regular participant in local car shows again brought her Saab Sonnet which she claims may be one of the only models of its kind in the US. Several members of the “Rakers” exhibited their fine machines including Chuck Boggs’ Maverick, Christie Thomas’ 1959 Morris Minor and Glenn Davis’ 1941 Ford pickup. Glenn’s car was one of eight class winners.

Given the nice weather, several spectators came down to enjoy the festivities. Richard and Judi Smith joined David and Sally Pendergast in admiring the hardware. Steve and Fran Gross showed their 2014 Porsche Boxster. A 1969 Porsche 912 owned by Rick and Nikki Morasco was another class winner. Bob Pistay displayed his tangerine 1972 914-6. Music was provided by Alex Rafael of MAXrpm which is the shop that did the work for Bob getting his 914 on the road.

Hey, there were some special cars as well as a festive atmosphere.

This is the third year for the car show and it has been supported by several groups. We appreciate the help from Sound Community Bank, the Yacht Club, Port Ludlow Associates, and the local Edward Jones folks, Rick Smith and Tyler Johnson among several others. The show has several purposes. It is a fun event for the community and usually the last car show of the season. The Rotary club also takes the opportunity to showcase the programs it manages and looks to recruit new members interested in helping provide service to the community — everything from erecting flags on holidays to eradicating polio world-wide. Oh yeah, there is also much fun to be had.

This column rarely ventures into the happy subject of politics but since we are somewhat into the topic of cars, I have come to notice the irony of folks buying Tesla vehicles. Based on the number of visible Kamala Harris and Donald Trump signs, it is not a step too far to conclude the majority of folks living in this area are liberal and are therefore supporters of Harris. I propose that, based on my entirely non-scientific observations, it appears that most of the EVs, (electric vehicles), are Teslas, made by Tesla, a company started and controlled by Elon Musk, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump. At the same time, I propose that most of the Tesla owners are more liberal and thus supporters of Kamala Harris. If any of the above is true, then there are Tesla-owning Harris supporters providing financial support to Elon Musk who has committed millions of dollars supporting the candidacy of Donald Trump.

That, my friends, is my lone foray into politics this year.

The new season of Port Ludlow Performing Arts acts began last weekend with an unusual presentation by “Big Sky, City Lights.” To pick up the general pitch seen elsewhere: Nick Spear and Susan O’Dea live in two completely different worlds. She’s Urban, he’s Rural. She’s Millennial, he’s Gen X. She’s a kale chicken Caesar salad, he’s last night’s cold pizza. He lives in Montana and she lives in New York. Two things that shouldn’t work actually do, and the connection point for them has always been harmony. When they sing together, they are undeniably and effortlessly aligned. They perform covers of well-known tunes as well as original songs penned during the 2020 lockdown.

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week.
