The 32nd annual Shipwrights’ Regatta was a success for local and visiting sailers, with close to 30 mariners braving the chilly winds on the water.
The racers competed in four different boat classes; Racing Class, Thunderbirds, Cruising Class for big boats, and Cruising Class for small boats.
A total of 28 teams raced throughout the triangular course Saturday afternoon, gliding throughout Port Townsend Bay. The event was organized by the Port Townsend Sailing Association and supported by the Northwest Maritime Center.
For the Racing Class, “Sir Isaac” took first place, “Underdog” earned the silver, and “Magdalena” took third.
“Kuma San” earned the gold in Thunderbirds while “Falcon” claimed second and “Owl” was in third.
For the big boat Cruising Class, “Erin” came in first, “Infinity” took second, and “Skimmer” placed in third.
“The Mighty Sparrow” claimed first place in the Cruising Class for small boats, while “Fiddlehead” took the silver spot and “Murrelet” earned third.
Sir Isaac was first across the finish line in the event, taking home the coveted Peg-Leg award as the first team to finish the Regatta.
The Golden Trident, awarded to the “saltiest” boat or crew in the event, was given to “Havhesten,” a 20-foot spitsgatter navigated by a five-woman crew. The Mighty Sparrow crew earned the Wire Cruising Boat trophy as the 19-foot open boat was first in the cruising class.
The Directional Helmet accolade was earned by the Erin crew after quite the navigational nightmare forced the team to restart the race multiple times.
“Emerald Green” received the Wack-o-Matic trophy for best use of misspent energy. The race crews were treated to a new accolade this year, the Wet Ass Award, which was earned by “Orange Soda” for braving the winter weather in an open boat with almost no freeboard.
Last but not least was the crew of “Houat” winning the Hook trophy as the final team to cross the finish line.
