First-time parents Shaina Stewart, 22, and Daryl Peneaux, 20, along with grandmother Rachel Stewart, 62, admire their healthy newborn baby, Seraphia Peneaux, on Friday evening, Jan. 2 at Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend. Seraphia - born at 10:07 a.m. on Jan. 2 and measuring 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 21 inches long - is Jefferson County's first-born baby of 2015. Peneaux and Stewart, who are not married, have lived in Quilcene for about six months, after moving from South Dakota. The couple arrived at the hospital at 6 a.m. and after a little more than four hours, Stewart gave birth naturally to her first child, with Peneaux cutting the cord. In fact, Stewart gave birth so quickly, nurses delivered her baby before a doctor arrived. That theirs might be the county's first-born baby of the new year never crossed the couple's minds, Peneaux said. The hospital gave the family a gift basket filled with handmade blankets; quilts; clothes; toys such as a rattle, a stuffed bear and Play-Doh; and other items to make mom's life a little easier during the coming months.
