A Navy sailor touring the Hood Canal with three other sailors was killed Friday after his motorcycle hit the back end of a pickup truck that was towing a trailer on US Highway 101 near the Yelvick General Store.
Jeffrey S. Thomas, 33, died at the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Thomas had been riding south on US 101 on a 2021 Yamaha MT-03 just before 11:30 a.m. May 26 when a 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup slowed to turn left.
Thomas’ motorcycle hit the back end, the State Patrol said.
Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly said the four sailors had gone for a ride along Hood Canal when the tragedy occurred.
“It was a bad set of circumstances,” Manly said.
Both the motorcycle and the pickup were totaled in the collision.
The driver of the pickup, a 62-year-old Poulsbo man, was not hurt in the wreck. A passenger in the truck, a 60-year-old Poulsbo woman, also escaped injury.
The crash remains under investigation.
A spokesperson said the Navy could not immediately identify where the sailor was stationed, and also noted that the man’s next-of-kin would have to be notified before any information was released.
