The East Jefferson Rivals middle school wrestling season is rapidly finishing what coaches have called “another great season on the mats.”
On Monday, March 18, the Rivals hosted their second-annual “Fight Night” event with South Whidbey, which was a joint practice designed to give both teams a chance to practice and wrestle with another team.
An estimated 60 wrestlers engaged in a fun-filled afternoon of live wrestling, followed by dodgeball and a pizza party.
“We planned to have two matches going at all times for most of the event, but we soon realized that, with the number of kids participating this year, we needed to increase it to three matches,” Coach Kade Wilford said. “The kids had a blast. It was all about getting on the mat and having a chance to wrestle someone new. Some of the kids dressed up in costumes, so it got a bit chaotic at times, which was just what this team needed. It was a great team bonding event for everyone involved.”
And on Wednesday, March 20, 26 of the Rivals’ middle school wrestlers traveled and competed in Port Angeles, at the high school, for the final regular meet of the season.
The East Jefferson wrestlers competed in 72 matches, winning 31 of them.
“Tonight was another great showing for our team,” Coach Ryan White said that evening. “We had a few of our athletes wrestle their best tonight. Eighth-grader Chase Gardner and sixth-grader James Gale both earned three wins. Finishing the night with two wins each were Savannah Grimm, Zeke Banks, Piper Hawkin and Aiden Glenn."
The final event of the season will be in Forks for the Middle School North Olympic League Championships on Wednesday, March 27.
