The East Jefferson Rivals baseball team faced Vashon Island High at their home field in Chimacum, but fell short against the Pirates, 12-2.

Still missing their starting catcher Cash Holmes, the Rivals struggled to keep Pirates players from stealing bases and scoring runs.

EJ had a good start to the matchup, succeeding at bat to get the bases loaded in the opening inning. The Rivals earned a run to go up 1-0.

The Rivals failed to score again until the fifth inning, however, when Nathan Nisbet got on first base, then proceeded to make his way home for a second run.

The score sat at 5-2 in Vashon’s favor going into the sixth inning.

Looking to close the Rivals’ chances of making the comeback, Vashon found their form at bat.

The Pirates proceeded to tack on six runs over EJ to go up 11-2. The Rivals didn’t find much success at bat in the sixth, other than a solid base hit from Chris Fair.

In the final inning, the Pirates put another run on the board while EJ’s batters were stymied again, scoring no runs to finish out the game.

With Vashon’s 12-2 win, the Rivals moved to a 1-6 season record.

EJ head coach Ben Lozano looked at the positives and areas for improvement after the game.

“I’m happy with the way we’re swinging the bats. They had a really good pitcher today; we just need to be a little more consistent when it comes to contact,” Lozano said.

“We just have to put together back-to-back hits in order to score some more runs. Two runs isn’t going to get it done.

“They’re a very good team, a well-coached team, but I think in the end that we can play with them,” he added.

Looking for a silver lining, Lozano praised several players for solid performances on the night.

“Chris Fair went 3-for-3 today; he had a real good day at the bat. The top of our order, Nate Nailer, Owen Thornton, Ryan Popp — those guys are swinging the bat pretty good,” he said.

The Rivals faced the Pirates again Friday, April 1, but Vashon got the better of EJ once again to win, 13-0.

The baseball team’s next matchup is Wednesday, April 13 versus Charles Wright Academy at home in Chimacum.
