On Thursday, May 2, most of the East Jefferson Rivals track and field team traveled to Bob Larson Stadium in Stanwood to compete in the Stanwood Twilight Invitational.

Conditions at the meet were near-perfect, leading to many personal records for East Jefferson athletes.

Highlights from the meet included a huge breakthrough for junior Nick Erickson in the 100-meter dash, with a third-place finish at 11.94, and a half-second personal record.

Junior Jasper Dances was sixth overall, with a personal record of 12.01.

In the girls’ 100-meter, freshman Carina Shiflett placed second in the field, with a personal record of 13.35.

The 200-meter sprint saw freshman Arden Moore win the event, in a personal record of 27.45, with teammate Clara Camp in third with a personal record of 28.28.

Freshman Kaida Rodrigues showed her talent in the 300-meter hurdles, with a second-place finish and a personal record of 52.48.

In the longer 400-meter sprint, sophomore Dillon Page Castillo pushed himself to a personal record of 57.26, to take fourth place.

In what may have been the most dramatic improvement for a Rival of the day, senior Reid Martin popped a 173’ 10” throw in the javelin, to win the competition and set a personal record by 15’ 1." Martin returned to score another personal record in the discus, with a throw of 110’ 9” to take fifth place.

In the girls’ javelin, senior Ellise Gardner took second with a toss of 112’ 8," while sophomore Sienna Emerson took fourth, with a personal record of 94’ 9."

Senior Henri Huber, although struggling with a thigh injury, was able to triple-jump his way to victory, with a personal record of 38’ 6.5."

In the girls’ field, Rodrigues also leapt to the winning spot, with a jump of 31’ 6."

The distance portion of the team traveled to the Liberty Twilight Invitational on Friday, May 2 in Renton where all 12 East Jefferson athletes competed in the 1,600-meter.

Eight of the athletes set personal records, and two set seasonal records in their races.

The boys’ competition had 255 runners divided into 11 heats.

Senior Indigo Gould was the top East Jefferson finisher, with a personal record of 4:37.18, earning her 48th place.

Freshman Joshua Yearian had a substantial personal record of 4:40.66, to place 59th and earned the title of seventh-fastest freshman at the meet.

On the girls’ side, there were 125 competitors divided into six heats.

Senior Sylvia Butterfield started the night off on a great note for the Rivals, as she won the first heat of the girls’ 1,600-meter in 6:08.85, a 6-second personal record.

Senior Aliyah Yearian was seventh overall in a time of 5:06.32.

Fellow senior Fiona Fraser pulled out of her recent performance slump, to place 18th overall with a personal record of 5:17.13 as Taylor Swift music blasted from the stadium sound system.

The high-energy distance meet was characterized by fast times, upbeat music throughout, and post-race ice cream for all competitors.

Soare Johnston came in 75th, with a 4:45.98 seasonal record.

Noah Isenberg came in 90th, with a 4:47.99 personal record.

Dustin Hines came in 129th, with a 4:57.01 personal record.

Nico Errichetti came in 193rd, with a 5:10.55 personal record.

Leah Ferland came in 75th, with 5:55.95.

Michael Gregg came in 102nd, with a 6:16.60 personal record.

Hilina Taylor-Lenz came in 114th, with a 6:25.83 seasonal record.

The team will next compete in the two-day District Championship meet at Vashon Island High School on Saturday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 14.

Qualifiers from this meet will move on to the WIAA 1A State Championship meet at Eisenhower High School in Yakima May 23-25.
