Richard Hausmann died peacefully on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2022.

Richard was born in Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 17, 1925. He graduated from Grant High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the 258th Field Artillery Battalion.

The 258th landed in Normandy on July 2, 1944, and was in combat for the next 302 days, fighting in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

He returned to Oregon in 1945 and attended Oregon State University. Richard married Esther Hestad in 1950 and moved to Port Townsend to work for the Crown Zellerbach Pulp and Paper Mill and raise their three children.

Richard enjoyed gardening, fishing and backpacking but his passion was golf. He learned to play as a teenager in Portland when his father operated the Inverness Golf Club and Richard was a competitive golfer in the Pacific Northwest into his 80s.

Richard is preceded in death by his wife Esther and his sisters Helen Hausmann and Ruth Anne McKay. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tom Ward; his grandson and

granddaughter-in-law, Trevor and Heather Ward and great-grandsons Charlie and Cole Ward; his grandson Stuart Ward; his son and daughter-in-law, Tom Hausmann and Kolleen Irvine; and

his son Paul Hausmann. Paul, with kindness and patience, acted as caregiver for both Richard and Esther in their final years.
