“ReUpholstered,” an evening of inspired improvisation featuring The Chairs, the Young Actors Improv Troupe, plays at the Chameleon Theater on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
These poised, vibrant and wickedly smart youths improvise with gut-wrenching simplicity and mind-bending humor, providing tears, intrigue, love and pocket-rocket melodrama – not to mention laughs.
“The truth can be hysterical,” says Joey Pipia, the troupe’s director. “And these actors are trained to focus on the truth.”
This show’s highlight is a breakneck long-form improvisation, during which the actors form an onstage tag team, creating the puzzle pieces that define one character’s life story. “An entire world will emerge, where before there was simply energy and curiosity,” says Pipia.
Chairs fans will recognize many favorite improv games. Dive in for an evening of alligators and blowfish, cityscapes and moonbeams, umbrella stands and sword swallowing.
The Chairs is composed of Jae Dvorak, Isaac Urner, Misha Cassella-Blackburn, Solomon Dusseljee, Olivia Noelle and Katherine Atkins.
Admission is by donation. The Chameleon Theater is located at 800 Park Ave. West, in the Port Townsend Business Park. Seating is limited. Contact 379-1068 or joey@olympus.net.
