The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series features some notable local talent at its 2 p.m. concert on Sunday, June 23, in the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park.

Among the multitude of talented musicians slated to perform that afternoon are conductor and soloist Matthew Daline, who plays the violin and viola, and soloist Kristin Smith on the violin.

Daline graduated from the Port Townsend High School Class of 1990, and has since built up an international career as a soloist, chamber musician and educator.

Daline’s career kicked when he won the Artists International Competition, which led to a solo recital debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall. He went on to perform and teach music master classes worldwide.

Daline earned a doctorate in musical arts after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the Juilliard School and Yale University, respectively. Daline and his wife, concert pianist Jennifer Chung, recently moved back to the area, where he said they have enjoyed teaching music in town.

“I’ve traveled the world, but I always returned home in the summer to see my mother,” Daline said. “My priorities have changed in these past few years, and we want to appreciate our time together.”

Besides, Port Townsend has “such a deep musical community that I couldn’t think of a better place to settle down.”

“It’s been fantastic working with the orchestra,” said Daline, who credited the orchestra with experiencing “tremendous growth” under the leadership of its current director, Tigran Arakelyan. “I first performed with the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra in 1987 as a high school student under Michael-Ann Burnett. It was the very first community orchestra in town.”

Daline returned throughout his musical education, and as a professional musician, to perform solos with the ensemble.

“Many members, like myself, have been there from the start,” Daline said. “It’s wonderful to be conducting a chamber orchestra concert with this group, and to be performing with my lifelong friend and inspiration, Kristin Smith.”

Smith was born and educated in Montana, where she earned her degree in music performance, with an emphasis on chamber music. Her career subsequently took her to Edmonton, Alberta, as a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

After retiring from that position, she came to Port Townsend to build a boat, and she continues to play in regional orchestras and chamber ensembles. She also teaches privately and in the public schools, with the OCEAN and “YEA Music!” programs.

Daline and Smith are slated to perform Bach’s concerto for two violins in in C-minor, Florence Price’s “Adoration” for the string orchestra, Paul Hindemith’s “Trauermusik” for the viola and string orchestra, and Béla Bartók’s Romanian folk dances for the string orchestra.

“This concert is all about variety and contrasts in musical styles,” Daline said.

Price was a prolific composer in the early 20th century, during which her status as an African-American woman hindered acceptance of her music, and following her death, much of her music was considered lost, until being rediscovered in 2009.

Hindemith, a German composer, produced “Trauermusik” (“funeral music” in English) within six hours after he learned of the death of King George V, while Bartók’s Romanian folk dances were drawn from Transylvania, which was part of Hungary when Bartok was wandering its countryside, before it became part of Romania.

The concert is free, but ticket reservations are required, due to limited seating. To reserve a ticket, go to https://myevent.com/PTSOChamberSeries.
