PT ReCyclery will hold open house next week

The Port Townsend ReCyclery is hosting an open house next week to celebrate its spring reopening and share what the ReCyclery has have been doing over the winter.

The event is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23.

“We are really excited to have opened up our shop space on Blaine Street to better facilitate programs and classes,” said Jordyn Oleachea, acting director of the ReCyclery.

“We are better able to host youth from our school systems for partnerships and classes, community shop days, and other access nights for people who are not traditionally represented in the bike industry,” Oleachea added.

The ReCyclery closed to the public in December 2022 to “give us time to retool the whole organization from our physical space to our organizational structure,” Oleachea said.

According to a statement on its website, the organization had “evolved into one that heavily relies on the full service repair shop to financially support program and mission-driven operations,” which they were not finding sustainable in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A big part of this shift and not leaning on a full service repair shop for our funding is that it allows us to be responsive to community needs and tailor our programming, classes and events,”  Oleachea said.

A casual group bike ride follows the open house, from the ReCyclery to Fort Worden.

Oleachea emphasized that next week’s event is a “soft opening,” and the organization will be rolling out programming, events, and classes in the future.
