A Port Hadlock man who was apparently seriously injured while trying to break into two homes on West Sims Way last summer is facing a felony charge of residential burglary.

Saul Cervantes was accused of residential burglary in Jefferson County Superior Court on April 25.

According to an incident report from the Port Townsend Police Department, Cervantes was found lying near West Sims Way just before 4 a.m. July 31 covered in blood and dressed only in his underwear.

Police were called to the scene just after 3:30 a.m. after someone reported hearing a person wailing for help.

An officer found Cervantes and discovered a significant cut on his right arm, and Cervantes barely responsive due to loss of blood. The officer called for an aid crew and put a tourniquet on the man’s arm. Cervantes, 22, was taken to Seattle by an airlift for medical treatment.

Officers found the windows to a front door of a home in the 1000 block of West Sims Way had been broken and there was a large amount of blood near the front door, according to the police report. A large amount of blood was also discovered close to nearby trash cans, and an officer also found what appeared to be Cervantes’ pants covered in blood.

Police believe Cervantes cut himself on the broken window glass while trying to break into the residence.

900 block was also discovered damaged, with blood nearby.

Both homes were unoccupied at the time.

The home in the 1000 block was a rental owned by a woman who lives in Friday Harbor. Attempts to get in touch with the owner of the other home were unsuccessful, according to an incident report from Port Townsend police.

Court papers noted that Cervantes “reeked of intoxicants” when he was found.
