The public gets a first look at a refurbished Building 202 at Fort Worden from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24. Thanks to state and local money, Peninsula College has turned the barracks built in 1904 into a modern education center, the college's new home in Jefferson County.
Peninsula College celebrates the grand opening of its new Port Townsend campus, located in Building 202 along "Barracks Row" at Fort Worden from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24.
The public is invited to join students and the Peninsula College Board of Trustees for a brief ceremony to be held behind the refurbished building, followed by light refreshments in the lobby, and the opportunity to view the new facility.
Building 202 is one of four Barracks Row structures built in 1904 for U.S. Army Coast Artillery troops at Fort Worden. As a dormitory-style housing at Fort Worden State Park last upgraded in the 1970s, Building 202 had 12 percent occupancy.
Peninsula College and other educational entities sought improved facilities in Jefferson County; the college had long conducted classes in what is known as the Schoolhouse (the original post hospital). The park's long-range plan targeted the Schoolhouse as being a potential site for motel-style accommodations.
Establishing an education center in one of the little-used barracks would be the first step toward opening other buildings to possible new tenants.
In 2011, the state Legislature approved a capital budget for the Building 202 project through Washington State Parks, and the City of Port Townsend committed funding. In 2013, money awarded from the Washington Department of Commerce, and fundraising from the Fort Worden Public Development Authority, pushed the project from the drawing board to construction planning.
The project's ceremonial groundbreaking took place in May 2015.
