Saturday, May 7 marks the opening day of the 2016 boating season in Port Townsend, and the Port Townsend Yacht Club invites all interested boaters and rowers to participate in the annual Opening Day Boat Parade.
The public is invited to view the waterfront parade from the Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC) dock, Pope Marine Park, City Dock or other convenient locations along Water Street. The parade is set to begin after the departure of the 12:30 p.m. state ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville.
Yacht Club members Marilynne Gates and Katherine Buchanan address spectators from the reviewing stand at the NWMC, describing the boats and participants as they pass.
Mayor Deborah Stinson is to be present to welcome the community to the annual event, and Tony Brown, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, conducts the traditional blessing of the fleet.
Local band Lobo Del Mar is slated to perform at the NWMC Commons from 2 to 4 p.m., immediately following the parade. The concert is sponsored by the Boat Owners Association of The United States.
