Permits for commercial-use salal in the Olympic National Forest will go on sale over two days in September and November.
Permit sales will be sold on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Quilcene office (295142 US Highway 101 S., Quilcene) and the Quinault office (353 South Shore Road, Quinault).
Permits will also be available on Thursday, Sept. 15 and Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Forks office (437 Tillicum Lane, Forks).
Sales will begin at 9 a.m. at each office on the day listed.
Anyone harvesting salal within the Olympic National Forest for the purpose of selling must carry a commercial-use permit while picking.
Forest Service officials said 100 permits will be available for sale at $150 a permit. Fifty permits will be offered from the Quilcene office for harvest areas located within Mason County and the east side of Clallam and Jefferson counties. Twenty-five permits will be offered from the Forks office for the west side of Clallam County.
Also, 25 permits will be offered from the Quinault office for harvest areas within Grays Harbor County and the west side of Jefferson County.
Those buying a permit must be at least 18 years of age and must provide a valid U.S. federal or state photo identification. Only cash or checks will be accepted; no credit cards or debit cards will be accepted.
A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply, officials noted, and only one permit is allowed per person.
A personal-use permit is required for those harvesting salal that is not intended to be sold or traded. People interested in obtaining a personal-use permit should contact a Forest Service office.
The 2023 salal dates for this season are pending and will be announced at a later time, according to the Forest Service.
For additional information about salal permit sales, contact Kevin Senderak at 360-280-5607 or a local Forest Service office.
